Jay Koka: “Almost all of our interaction with cars is from the inside yet almost all automotive themed art is viewed from the exterior. This is something I’ve wanted to explore for a long time.

I was driving in downtown San Francisco a few years ago near Union Square and came to a stop behind a pair of motorcycle cops. The idea for the painting came in an instant but it took a while to become reality. Two years later, I heard the song Flashing Lights by Kanye West and the idea for the painting immediately solidified in my mind.”

“Flashing Lights” is a very large 45x60” major new work from Jay Koka featuring an unusual viewpoint of a busy intersection from the interior of a new Ferrari California Spyder. Presumably speeding, the driver has just been pulled over by the police.

Please Note: The original version is shown above. Note that the painting was subsequently altered on sale at the request of the owner. Revisions include the reflection in the mirror as well as removal of and minor detail changes to the jewellery. The print is based on the original version of the painting.

Jay Koka: “I was out on my bike last year (2008) and I pulled up beside a friend driving a beater. I said, sarcastically, hey, nice car!

As is usual for me, the idea for a painting came in a flash. And as is also usual for me, it took me a while to get it done.

Oddly, I had not considered the impact of the very large image area occupied by the door until I actually started the painting. I was very concerned at the beginning that it would become the dominant element of the painting. I had to work hard to keep it under control and in the end, I think it worked out well. “Hey, Nice Car” features my Porsche Cayman S and an interior that makes it worthwhile to look inside.”

A very large 45x60” major work currently in the artist's collection.

Jay Koka: "This is an extremely rare street rod painting for me. I am not hugely interested in rods so I tend not to pay attention. Recently I was walking around the concours field early during setup and came across a crew hard at work preparing the car for the show. I am not sure what caught my eye, perhaps it was the huge contrast between the early morning sunlit areas and the long shadows... whatever it was, it ended up as a hugely satisfying work. Or maybe I just like the flames." The following informed description of the car featured in the painting is by Brian Brennan, Editorial Director, Source Interlink Media: "Upon closer examination of the Koka painting titled "Clean Up" one realizes the car depicted is the iconic McMullen 1932 Ford highboy roadster with its distinctive flames and pinstriping over the black body. It also has the distinctive split wishbones/bracket on the front suspension. The car has long been the "mascot" for Street Rodder magazine and the car itself is currently owned by Jorge Zaragoza that was fully restored by Roy Brizio Hot Rods. Fun looking at the painting."
